Getting Started

When the BeeMail Proxy application starts up for the first time, it shows its configuration window. Later, you can also get to this window by selecting "Preferences" from the "BeeMail Proxy" menu in OS X, or the "Edit" menu on OS 9 and prior.

In this window, you set up your e-mail address and outgoing mail server (SMTP). Your e-mail address is used for authentication purposes only and is needed to sign you up for your free BeeMail 30-day trial account. You can also tell the proxy which local address and port to listen on, as well as whether you want the proxy to start automatically when it runs and whether you want the proxy to be loaded when you start your computer.

The BeeMail Proxy tries to obtain your e-mail address and outgoing mail server information through InternetConfig, so this information may already be filled out for you. Please verify the outgoing mail server address, port, and SSL settings. You can get this information from your System Administrator, or Internet Service Provider (ISP). (If your SMTP server requires authentication, you will need to set this up in your e-mail client application. It may already be set up there.)

The local proxy address and port determine where the proxy listens for connections from your e-mail application on your local machine. Normally, you do not need to change this information. The only time you would need to make changes here is if you already have another service running on the same address and port.

The "Auto-Start Proxy" check box specifies whether the proxy should automatically start listening on its local address and port when the BeeMail Proxy application starts up, so you do not have to manually start the proxy.
When "Run Proxy on Startup" is checked, BeeMail Proxy will be automatically loaded when the computer starts up. It will be sleeping in the background while it waits for connections from your e-mail application as you send out e-mails.
Normally, you would want both of these check boxes checked.

Next Steps: If you have multiple e-mail accounts that use different outgoing mail servers, read the Advanced Proxy Configuration chapter to learn how to set up the BeeMail Proxy to work with more than one SMTP server. Otherwise you may skip ahead to the E-mail Client Configuration chapter to find out how to set up your e-mail application so it works with the BeeMail Proxy.
