As publishers attempt to streamline their production workflows and to reduce the costs and production times in their prepress operations, the PDF file format seems to be the document exchange format of choice. Yet the production of a PDF file in itself does not guarantee the correct production of a print document. Special systems are required to preflight and edit these PDF files prior to routing to the final Imaging and or Printing center. The Beehive/ PDF certification system uses a “mostly” serial workflow to accomplish the routing and handling of jobs being preflighted through a central pdf engine. A step-by-step description of this workflow provides considerable insight into the functionality and purpose of this system.

Beehive/ PDF Certification System - By the Numbers:

1-2-3) The pdf file is Submitted by the customer using Beehive file transfer client with a “Simple as 1-2-3” procedure - The Beehive file transfer client submits a job to the PDF certification system after type checking the forms data according to rules written in the form. These forms can be edited and distributed from a central location using the Beehive Service protocol. The file transfer is handled in secure fashion by the Beehive https file transfer server and appropriate receipts and notifications are executed when the appliance has confirmed receipt of the job. A new “reroute address” feature has been added to the forms to enable the forms to be sent on to their next destination after they are processed by the file manager “handler”.

4) The Job is handed to the Pitstop “IN” folder by Beehive file manager - The Beehive file manager in the Beehive File Transfer appliance, saves the PDF file to the PDF Certification “IN” folder of the Windows 2000 server and then saves the forms data to the Forms folder, naming it the same name as the PDF file.

5) Pitstop Processes Job - After the Pitstop has processed the PDF file, it writes the PDF file to one of three folder locations “Successful”, “Warnings” or “Failed”. At the same time, Pitstop writes a report to the “reports” folder. The Report is named “FilenameX.pdf” where FilenameX is the name of the original PDF file sent to be certified.

6) Special Beehive Windows Client Handles Finished Jobs - A Special Beehive Windows Client reroutes the certified PDF job to the reroute address, updates the Beehive job tracking system status with the PDF Report and sends the appropriate email notifications.

Beehive (including its private label versions) is the most widely installed file transfer software in the printing, prepress and newspaper industries with over 1500 site licenses and 100,000 end users.
